Hepatitis C Training for Primary Care Providers

ASHM offers a range of face-to-face and online education courses, designed specifically for general practitioners, clinicians and nurses working in Alcohol and other Drug settings, nurses and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers.

We are also able to tailor courses to meet the specific needs of your industry or organisation.

Hepatitis C New Treatments Course

New highly effective interferon-free hepatitis C medicines that are well tolerated are available through both the PBS General Schedule (‘Section 85’) from 1 March 2016. This course will support primary care medical practitioners to prescribe these hepatitis C treatment regimens in accordance with the PBS requirements. This activity has been approved by RACGP QI&CPD Program. Total (40) Category 1 CPD Points. It includes a 2 hour online learning module and one day course. ​​

Learning Outcomes:

  • Screen at risk patients, order and interpret tests appropriately to diagnose chronic hepatitis C infection
  • Perform the recommended baseline assessment including assessing liver disease severity and screening for potential drug-drug interactions, evaluate patient treatment
  • readiness and manage any associated comorbidities
  • Explain approved antiviral treatment options and duration of therapy for all HCV genotypes based on prior treatment experience and cirrhotic status
  • Prescribe HCV antiviral therapy in accordance with PBS patient and prescriber eligibility criteria
  • Recognise risk factors, clinical signs, symptoms and complications of advanced liver disease and manage or refer to specialist care appropriately


Chronic Hepatitis C Curing Hepatitis C in 2016

This evening update gives an overview of diagnosis, pre-treatment assessment, staging of liver disease and information on new treatments. This activity has been approved by the RACGP QI&CPD program. Allocated 2 pts/hour, totalCPD points 4 (Category 2).

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret test results and diagnose hepatitis C appropriately
  • Ensure that people at risk of hepatitis C infection are regularly screened
  • Manage and monitor people with chronic hepatitis C suitably, including staging of liver disease and lifestyle modifications as needed
  • Assess for advanced liver disease, monitor for hepatocellular carcinoma and refer appropriately
  • Advise patients about new therapies for hepatitis C so they can make informed treatment decisions​
