Deadly Sex Congress

The Deadly Sex Congress is an annual forum for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sexual health workers from across Queensland to update knowledge, build workforce capacity, and share stories.

The Congress includes updates on current and emerging issues in blood-borne viruses (BBVs) and Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with a focus on hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis, harm reduction, contact tracing, men's and women's health, healthy relationships, sexuality and gender diversity, and resource development.

It is free to attend, and accommodation will be provided to delegates for up to 2 nights.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for attendance at the Deadly Sex Congress 2023 are as follows.

In the following order preference will be given to:

  • An Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander Sexual Health Worker/ Blood Borne Viruses or Indigenous Sexual Health/ Blood Borne Viruses Worker whose primary role is to deliver sexual health services and programs
  • A Generalist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker who can demonstrate that they perform sexual health/ Blood Borne Viruses duties as part of their generalist work
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community worker, project, health promotion and/ or support officer in the following sectors (NGO):
  1. HIV/ AIDS
  2. Viral Hepatitis
  3. Injecting Drug Use
  4. Sexual and Reproductive Health
  5. An Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander person currently working in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health sector with imminent plans to move into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sexual health/ Blood Borne Viruses service delivery i.e. within 12 months

PLEASE NOTE:  Eligibility is at the discretion of the Deadly Sex Organising Committee with the Chairperson holding a deliberate and casting vote.

The Deadly Sex Congress Excellence Awards

The Deadly Sex Congress Excellence Awards recognise, celebrate, promote and reward the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers in sexual health, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood-borne viruses (BBVs). The awards are supported by Queensland Health.

Award categories (more details on next page):

  • Category 1 Organisation, Service, Program or Project Excellence Award.
  • Category 2 Individual Excellence Awards.

Awardees will also be invited to provide a short, community story presentation at the Deadly Sex Congress to talk about their work. Awardees will be notified a month prior to the Congress to allow for preparation time.

Who can submit a nomination?

  1. Any organisation or individual who works in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sexual health, STIs or BBVs in Queensland.
  2. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers are encouraged to submit applications for themselves, their peers, and/or an organisation.
  3. Organisations or individuals may apply themselves or nominate another organisation or individual.
  4. An organisation or individual can submit multiple applications.

The Awards Process

  • Applications will be assessed by the Deadly Sex Organising Committee.
  • The Deadly Sex Organising Committee reserves the right to defer awards if there are no suitable nominees.
  • Decisions are final, and no appeals are possible.
  • The application must provide sufficient information for the Committee to make a fair judgement.
