The word Wuchopperen comes from the Wik Mungkan language (Western Cape York Peninsula area around the Aurukun region) loosely translated it means House/Place of Medicine – “Wuch” meaning house or place and Operrak – medicine (encompassing of both physical and spiritual).

 

Wuchopperen Health Service are a not for profit, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, delivering integrated, holistic and primary health care service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the greater Cairns region. For over 40 years their vision has been to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and by doing so keeping generations growing stronger.

 

Each year their vital work within the community they care for produces extremely impressive results. In 2019 alone:

  • 6,598 clients had accessed and received a service
  • 63,139 client contacts were recorded
  • 367 out of 403 children between the ages of 1-5 were fully immunized
  • 88% of babies had normal birth weights
  • 8,000 client transport trips were completed
  • 2,229 total healthcare checks were undertaken
