HIV Training

ASHM workforce education is free-of-charge and accredited for CPD where applicable through relevant professional bodies such as RACGP, Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), Australian College of Nursing and Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA).

As a result of COVID-19 restrictions, most education activities are currently delivered online. ASHM is continually working to ensure a high quality, interactive learning experience on all platforms, including online. Face-to-face modalities will be offered where possible.

Facilitated online training:

ASHM courses are currently being delivered online with experienced clinical advisors and facilitators. Our HIV facilitated online sessions include interactive presentations and online tools to ensure an engaging learning experience.

This activity is designed for general practitioners, other community-based medical practitioners, and nurse practitioners to effectively diagnose, manage and treat HIV within their primary care setting.

To become a HIV s100 Prescriber, general practitioners, other community-based medical practitioners, and nurse practitioners will need to either:

Completing the HIV Prescriber Course (including pre course requisite, 2-day onsite course/4-week online course, post-course assessment and reinforcing activity)
Applying to receive recognition for prior experience

Duration: Online – 4 weeks. Face to face – 2 day
CPD: This course and associated activities is accredited with the RACGP QI & CPD program for the 2020-2022 triennium (activity number 186895) . Allocated 40 CPD Accredited Activity points.

The HIV s100 Peer Support and Case Discussion Series run by ASHM aims to support newly accredited, rural and remote, and low case-load HIV s100 prescribers. These sessions will provide an opportunity for prescribers to ask questions, participate in case discussions, seek advice, network and provide peer support.

Duration: 1 hour
CPD: HIV s100 prescribers will be awarded 1 HIV CPD point for attending a session.

Educational sessions for current HIV prescribers and other primary care clinicians with an interest in HIV, on managing patients in the primary care setting and the decision to commence a patient on antiretroviral therapy. The prescriber evening updates are conducted through various formats, including interactive case discussions, sector updates and conference report backs. Case scenarios are developed by ASHM clinical advisors or local experts to meet the identified learning needs of ASHMs HIV prescribers, which vary from each State and Territory.

Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
CPD: Allocated 4 CPD activity points (activity number varies) in the RACGP QI&CPD Program for the 2020-2022 triennium. HIV s100 prescribers will be awarded 2 CPD point for attending.

These trainings will provide GPs and primary care clinicians in Australia an update on HIV and strategies available for the prevention of HIV transmission, exploring how to screen for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) eligibility, how to prescribe PrEP, and the best practice for monitoring patients on PrEP.

HIV and PrEP Essentials
HIV and PrEP for Primary Care
HIV, PEP and PrEP Update for Primary Care

Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours

CPD: Allocated 4 CPD activity points (activity number varies) in the RACGP QI&CPD Program for the 2020-2022 triennium. HIV s100 prescribers will be awarded 2 CPD point for fully attending each session.

This training will provide participants with an overview of the chronic disease needs of people living with HIV and aims to increase the capacity of the primary care workforce to engage in HIV management.

Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours

CPD: Allocated 4 CPD activity points (activity number TBC) in the RACGP QI&CPD Program for the 2020-2022 triennium. HIV s100 prescribers will be awarded 2 CPD point for fully attending training session.

The sessions provide an update on important emerging developments in HIV and STIs, discuss the applicability of results from a journal article to patient population, and give opportunities for clinicians to integrate the latest evidence on a range of clinical topics into diagnosis and management strategies in their clinical settings.
