World AIDS Day is held annually on 1 December and a different theme is chosen each year. World AIDS Day started in 1988 with the theme of communication. The themes are designed to focus attention on and raise awareness of particular issues. This year’s Australian theme aims to educate people and raise awareness about HIV prevention.

WAD 2005

Australia has been very successful in containing its HIV epidemic. We do not have infection rates like those seen in many developing or developed countries. However, we need to recommit ourselves to learning from, improving on and sharing our experiences with others in Australia and internationally. For 2005 Australia has adopted the World AIDS Day slogan "HIV/AIDS – Let’s talk about it".

Fact Sheet

World Aids Day factsheet coverASHM has produced a 4-page “HIV/AIDS Lets Talk About It” factsheet for health care workers.

The factsheet summarises current HIV statistics and management practices – from transmission and testing through to counselling and treatment.

It is intended for a generalist audience of medical practitioners and health care providers.
