National

National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS)

The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System was established in 1990 under the auspices of the Communicable Diseases Network Australia. The System co-ordinates the national surveillance of more than 50 communicable diseases or disease groups. Under this scheme, notifications are made to the States or Territory health authority under the provisions of the public health legislation in their jurisdiction.

Computerised, de-identified unit records of notifications are supplied to the Department of Health and Ageing for collation, analysis and publication on the Internet and in the quarterly journal Communicable Diseases Intelligence.

CDI is published quarterly (March, June, September and December) by the Surveillance Section, Biosecurity and Disease Control Branch, Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

NNDSS data can also be extracted online from: www1.health.gov.au/cda/Source/CDA-index.cfm

Australian Gonococcal Surveillance Program

The AGSP is funded by the Federal health department to provide laboratory analysis of gonococcal isolates in Australia. The Programme produces an annual report on its findings as well as a report on the WHO Western Pacific Region Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme. This page links to annual reports published since 1996.

The AGSP annual reports are available online from the department's website.
