Outcomes for people living with HIV infection have improved greatly over the last 20 years associated with the success of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Around half of the HIV care in Australia is provided in general practice, however most patients consult a variety of doctors for their care including GPs, sexual health and other medical specialists.

Available data suggest that GP and specialist HIV care is fairly consistent with good outcomes. However, there remains considerable uncertainty around ‘shared care’ – a model of care in which a patient sees a GP and a specialist. The purpose of these resources is to provide guidance regarding recommended monitoring and preventative health for patients with HIV infection and the utilisation of a comprehensive GP Management Plan for HIV shared care.
