ASHM have released a Position Statement: Nurse Practitioner Prescribing for Section 100 Medications for the treatment of HIV and Hepatitis B and Section 85 Medications for Hepatitis C in Australia.
The current PBS prescribing eligibility criteria unnecessarily restrict access to treatment for individuals seeking health care for HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) with the appropriate experience, expertise and qualifications, working within a collaborative framework, should be authorised to initiate patients on PBS-subsidised treatments for blood-borne viruses and the provision of ongoing treatment.
ASHM advocates for and supports a change to the PBS to allow suitably qualified NPs to be able to autonomously prescribe PBS subsidised treatments for blood borne viruses including HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. This will increase and promote timely, affordable and equitable access to treatment in Australia.
ASHM is responding to many enquiries about whether the advanced sexual health nursing subjects that have been offered by the Australian College of Nursing will be held in 2016 and ongoing. The College considers these subjects unviable currently due to low enrolment numbers.
ASHM is investigating options for these subjects to be delivered, due to demand from within the sector. If you are interested in seeing these subjects continue to be available, please confirm by contacting the ASHM Nursing Program. The more people who indicate an interest, the more likely they are to be held again.
