Community Pharmacy

Pharmacists have a vital role to play in patient care in HIV, viral hepatitis and sexual health.

Prescriptions for HIV and hepatitis B medicines, written after 1 July 2015 will be able to be dispensed in community pharmacy. Much change is also on the horizon for dispensing arrangements for hepatitis C.

ASHM has had a long association with a small number of mainly hospital-based pharmacists who work in HIV medicine and trained pharmacists who have ventured into other areas such as research.

ASHM is involved in a number of initiatives to equip community pharmacists to play a greater role in HIV medicine, including face-to-face training, resources and webinars.

We have assisted the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) to develop a professional publication for pharmacists to raise awareness about HIV management and dispensing HIV medicines in the community which will be available from the PSA June 2015.
