National Testing Policy

  • The Hepatitis C Subcommittee of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on AIDS, Sexual Health and Hepatitis, and the Blood Borne Virus and STIs Subcommittee of the Australian Population Health Development Principal Committee, have released the National Hepatitis C Testing Policy.

The Policy is a comprehensive document about the guiding principles of hepatitis C testing, with sections on indications for testing, infection control in health care settings, surveillance and research, pre- and post-test discussions, diagnostic strategies and quality assurance of testing.

The Policy has been developed to assist government, health professionals, industry, people living with hepatitis C, and the general community about matters associated with hepatitis C testing. The document includes reference to improving access to testing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and guiding pre-and post-test discussion to take into account cultural issues.

Pre- and post-test discussions are an important part of hepatitis C testing, and can help provide education about hepatitis C and its prevention. The Policy provides information about informed consent, risk assessment and reasons for testing, delivery of test results and harm reduction strategies.

The National Hepatitis C Testing Policy is available from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing at the following link:

Hepatitis C Think Tank

  • The 2007 Hepatitis C Think Tank focused on expanding access to hepatitis C treatment.

As the host of the meeting, ASHM used the Think Tank as a forum to assist it with its planning of its National Viral Hepatitis Education Program, particularly those aspects of that program which related to HCV treatment access.
