HIV Prescriber Program

The HIV community s100 prescribing program administered by ASHM provides initial training, ongoing support and various means by which prescribers can attain CME points for prescribers in NSW, ACT, VIC and SA.
As part of the initial accreditation process to become an s100 HIV community prescriber, a practitioner must fulfil each of the four criteria outlined in the National Standards for Certification of Community HIV s100 Prescribers (2008).

Criterion 1
Completion of an accredited training course or recognition of prior experience/learning
Criterion 2
Knowledge of your state/territory guidelines for the management of exposure to HIV and infection control guidelines
Criterion 3
Access to appropriate support from senior clinicians working in a designated inpatient HIV unit in a public hospital
Criterion 4
Commitment to ongoing HIV specific medical education

In order to maintain HIV (s100) prescriber rights, community medical practitioners must participate in ongoing continuing medical education (CME) relevant to the use of s100 drugs for the management of HIV. If you are interested in becoming a HIV s100 prescriber please submit your expression of interest.

Please follow the links below to view the National Standards for the Accreditation of Community HIV s100 Education Programs and the National Standard for Certification of Community HIV s100 Prescribers that govern the ASHM s100 HIV Prescriber program

Please follow the link below to the ''Initial accreditation and maintenance documents for NSW/ACT, VIC''. This document outlines the criteria for maintaining accreditation in NSW, ACT and VIC. It includes information pertaining to the award and accrual of HIV CME points, annual assessment of CME activity, HIV CME adjudication of activities delivered by external providers, self adjudication of HIV CME activities and Annual reaccreditation. A HIV CME point''s award and accrual table for HIV community prescriber for the triennium 2008 - 2010 is included in this document.

South Australian clinicians, please be advised that the maintenance of s100 community prescriber accreditation differs from the other states and determines that five of the seven required annual CME points are accrued by participating in SA based CME activities. For further details please follow the link provided to the ''Initial accreditation and maintenance documents for South Australia''

HIV Prescriber Mentorship Program
It is mandatory that prescribers participate in a mentoring program in the year following accreditation. This should consist of a minimum of 4 occasions of mentoring with a HIV specialist. The prescriber will accrue HIV CME points for the completion of this process.

This program increases communication between community prescribers and specialists, allowing discussion of HIV patient management issues and treatment options. Mentorship is recognised by ASHM as a CME activity with 2 HIV CME points being allocated for each cumulative hour of mentoring or case conferencing.

To register an occurrence of mentoring please log on to the prescribers page in ''My ASHM''
Clinical Placements
Clinical placements provide new and existing prescribers with the opportunity to explore clinical and practical aspects of managing a patient with HIV and associated conditions. ASHM is able to arrange clinical placements at a number of clinics nationally.

Scholarships are available to assist regional prescribers in NSW and ACT to attend clinical placements.
