In May 2005, the Department of Health WA launched a statewide campaign to: 1) raise awareness of the availability of nPEP amongst target groups, specifically to increase knowledge of how and when to access nPEP and 2) increase the level of appropriate treatment with nPEP. The ongoing campaign incorporates targeted promotion to men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, people in serodiscordant relationships and other at risk groups; training of key workforce groups; promotion of state-based guidelines to health care providers; maintenance of a database and a 24 hour nPEP phone line for members of the public to undertake a risk assessment following a risk exposure and to be referred to appropriate services. The current Operational Directive (updated in 2007) clarifies the appropriate use and methods of access to nPEP in the Department of Health WA sites and institutions. The document supports the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing's National Guidelines for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis after Non-occupational Exposure to HIV.
