Did you know.... by the end of 2011, there were an estimated 226 700 people living with chronic hepatitis C in Australia. Many patients have deferred treatment while waiting for newer therapy with less side effects. Some of these patients may be at risk of developing advanced liver disease and liver cancer. New treatments recently listed on the PBS offer increased response rates for genotype 1 patients.
This update will include the latest information on:
Testing at risk patients and interpreting test results
Natural history and disease progression
Clinical management in primary health care settings
Treatment for hepatitis C side effects and efficacy of antiviral therapy

Hepatitis B Nursing: Advanced Nursing Management and Care

ASHM invites all nurses with hepatology experience to register for Hepatitis B Nursing: Advanced Nursing Management and Care developed in partnership with the Australasian Hepatology Association (AHA).
Learning Objectives are based on the AHA's Competency Standards for the Hepatology Nurse (2008) and the AHAs Consensus-based Nursing Guidelines for the Care of Patients with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Advanced Liver Diease and Hepatocellular Carcinoma. The course is also endorsed by the Australian Liver Association (ALA).
Module 1 is an interactive online learning module covering the fundamental concepts of hepatitis B nursing and is made available to participants before attending the face-to-face course.
Module 2 is a two-day, face to face course providing nurses with advanced practical skills and knowledge in hepatitis B nursing. The first day expands on the issues covered in module 1, covers epidemiology, vaccination, testing and explores the cultural context of hepatits B nursing. Clinical updates on advanced liver diease, hepatocellular carcinoma and co-infection are provided and the nurses role in assessment is disucssed. The second day introduces treatment, discusses the role of nursing in hepatitis B care and explores various models fo care. Next is an in depth discussion of culturally competent hepatitis B nursing care, including working with interpreters. Finally, the specific needs of other priority populations will be discussed and reviewed through case studies.
This course is free for NSW nurses. Nurses from other states and territories are welcome to attend by paying a registration fee.

The Introduction to HIV Care for General Practitioners is a 1 day course that aims to provide general practitioners (GPs) with an understanding of issues relating to the clinical care of HIV positive people in a primary care setting. This course targets GPs who are interested in co-managing HIV positive patients with specialists through providing general medical care that may relate to HIV. The Introduction to HIV Care for General Practitioners is also a pathway into HIV community prescribing as it is a prerequisite for the ASHM s100 HIV Prescriber Course.The course is also a useful introduction to the management of HIV patients for GPs with a general interest in HIV.
The course involves an online component (Module 1) and an accompanying predisposing activity which must be completed before attending. The face-to-face component (Module 2 & 3) will be presented by HIV specialists through a series of lectures and role-plays involving HIV positive speakers.

Hepatitis C s100 Prescriber Course

This course will cover specialised management of chronic hepatitis C infection, including detailed assessment and care of patients undergoing treatment. Successful completion of this course and the associated assessment will enable interested community based medical pratitioners to become accredited to rescribe HCV s100 drugs for the maintenance treatment of hepatitis C under shared care arrangements.
Learning objectives:
Screen at risk patients approprately, describe the tests involved in the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C infection and assess disease severity
Monitor patients with chronicc hepatitis C appropriately, establish suitability for treatment and refer for specialist care if indicated
Explain the aims of treatment, antiviral treatment options for HCV infection including duration of therapy, genotypes and likely response rates
Monitor patients on HCV antiviral therapy according to established treatment protocols, recognise and manage side effects of HCV antiviral therapy appropriately to ensure patient safety
Recognise risk factors, clinical signs, symptoms and complications of advanced liver disease and manage or refer to specialist appropriately
This is a FREE course and lunch will be provided.
This course has been funded by NSW Health.

This course is designed for Registered and Enrolled Nurses whose patients have, or are at risk of, blood borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). It will provide nurses with the introductory practice skills and knowledge to incorporate sexual health screening and management into their current area of specialty.
It outlines the public health aspects and clinical management of common STIs, HIV and hepatitis B and advocates for a proactive and practical approach to health care and evidence based practice.
This course is provided through two online modules and a two-day workshop. The program provides a comprehensive overview of population health principles including epidemiology, health promotion, contact tracing and common practice issues related to sexual health. Participants will gain experience in completing sexual health histories and risk assessments for STIs. The clinical spectrum and management of common STIs, HIV and hepatitis B are discussed through presentations and interactive small group work.
Registration for this course is FREE for NSW nurses. The cost for the course for non-NSW participants is $400 (ASHM members) or $440 (non-ASHM members). Priority to attend the course will be given to NSW nurses. Costs associated with this course have been covered by the Sexual Health Nursing Program administered by ASHM and funded by NSW Ministry of Health.

The ASHM HIV s100 Prescriber Course provides medical practitioners with comprehensive training in the science of HIV, current pharmacology, monitoring and treatment, as well as the complicating factors surrounding HIV management.
This is a 2 day course that builds on the first 3 modules covered in the one-day Introduction to HIV Care for General Practitioners course. There are 5 modules that are held face-to-face on both a full-time and part-time basis and the course is also available via distance-learning.
The course involves a face-to-face component covered across 2 days (Modules 4, 5, 6 & 7) and a self-directed learning activity (Module 8) to be completed subsequent to the face-to-face component.
Completion of these modules in addition to the 3 modules covered in the Introduction to HIV Care for General Practitioners and the case study assessment enables GPs to apply for the right to prescribe s100 drugs for HIV in NSW, ACT, VIC and SA.

Participants in this program are provided with a range of HIV resources including ASHM publications, changes and additions to the s100 list, resources for patients, product information and NSW Health Department circulars relating to the management of HIV.
This course is not associated with any costs to medical practitioners in NSW. Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided For other particpants Cost $560 for ASHM members and $600 for non ASHM members.

HIV and STIs - a new era? is a short sexual health update focusing on what's new in sexual health and HIV. The update will include developments in the sector including the new priorities and treatments.
The second half of the evening will be a series of case studies to allow you an opportunity to discuss issues with colleagues. Members from the local Sexual Health Centre have been invited to come along and provide a brief overview of their services and how they can support you. This evening update has been approved by the RACGP for 4 category 2 QI&CPD points.

A panel discussion led by
Natalie Beckett, Aboriginal Hepatitis Liaison Officer, Kevin Heath, Male Aboriginal Sexual Health Promotion Officer and Stacey Foster, Female Aboriginal Sexual Health Promotion Officer will have a local focus. It will provide an overview of local service provisions and referral pathways within the La Perouse area. They will outline the public health issues and existing barriers to testing and treatment for BBVs in Aboriginal clients.
Lisa Merrison, Aboriginal Health Program Officer (Closing The Gap)Eastern Sydney Medicare Local will discuss relevant Medicare items and the incentives to the GP to see more Aboriginal clients.

STI Active Learning Module Workshops
ASHM in collaboration with NSW STIPU are running a series of STI Active Learning Module (ALM) workshops across NSW titled 'Sex......Need a Hand'.
This ALM is an RACGP Category 1 workshop that attracts 40 Category 1 QI&CPD points or 4 Category 2 QI&CPD points per Module for GPs. Participation is also awarded 8 PDP Points and 4 EXT Skill Points from ACRRM.
The workshops consist of three modules:
Module 1 - STI Testing and Management.
Module 2 - Working with priority populations.
Module 3 - Contact Tracing.
In order to obtain the points, you must attend all three modules.

Advanced Subjects in Sexual Health Nursing
In collaboration with the Australian College of Nursing, ASHM has developed two post-graduate subjects. These may be completed as part of a Graduate Certificate or as individual courses.
1. Sexual Health Nursing: Principles and Practice is designed to improve nursing practice by providing the theoretical knowledge base required to assess and manage clients with, or at risk of, sexually transmissible infections.
2. Sexual Health Nursing: Clinical Practice aims to provide nurses with a competency based clinical framework leading to sexual health skills accreditation.
Each subject can be completed over one semester and participants must enrol through The Australian College of Nursing on 02 9745 7500 or http://www.acn.edu.au/ More information is available in the flyer here.
