Practical Guidelines and Frameworks

STI Management Guidelines

ASHM has developed the Australian STI Management Guidelines for Use in Primary Care, under the auspices of ASHA.

The Guidelines are a website designed for primary care health professionals. They provide concise information to support the prevention, testing, diagnosis, management and treatment of sexually transmissible infections.

NSW Guidelines for Managing STIs

ASHM endorses the NSW STI Strategy 2016-2020

WA Guidelines for Managing STIs

ASHM supported the development of the Western Australian Guidelines for Managing STIs

MSM Testing Guidelines

ASHM has endorsed the Australian STI & HIV Testing Guidelines for Men Who Have Sex With Men

Competency Standards

ASHM endorses the Sexual Health Competency Standards for Primary Health Care Nurses, developed by NSW STIPU and supported the development of the ASHHNA Competency Standards for Sexual and Reproductive Health Nurses.

Policy Development

ASHM has an active program of policy development. ASHM aims to develop and share STI policies and guidelines of relevance to clinicians and other health professionals. We also have a range of policies related to HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

We provide feedback and contribute to policy reviews in the sector and also develop position statements, which reflect our policy opinion on a number of clinical and non-clinical issues.

The <position statements> page lists current position statements, work in progress and policy contributions ASHM has made. If you identify any gaps in STI policy or guidelines, please contact

Australasian Sexual Health Alliance (ASHA)

ASHA, a committee of ASHM, works to improve national and local responses to sexual health issues via a multidisciplinary support network.
