February 2016:  ASHM staff will be travelling to Cairns, Thursday Island and Bamaga from the 13-17 March 2017 to run 6 courses on HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and STIs for a wide audience. This will include a Hepatitis B s100 Prescriber Course on Thursday Island on Wednesday 15 March, for which travel scholarships are still available.

The Far North region was identified in the recent 2015 Third National Hepatitis B Mapping Report as the highest prevalence area for hepatitis B in Queensland, with an estimated prevalence of 2.52%, more than one percent higher than any other area in the state. Only 4.3% of patients within the PHN receive treatment or monitoring, and 1.6% are currently on treatment. This is well below the current National Hepatitis B Strategy target of 15% receiving treatment by 2017, and the Queensland Hepatitis B Action Plan 2016-2021 aim of all people living with chronic hepatitis B receiving appropriate monitoring or treatment by 2021.

Far North Queensland is currently experiencing high rates of chlamydia, gonorrhoea and hepatitis B, while rates of syphilis and HIV have recently increased dramatically. The North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sexually Transmissible Infections Action Plan 2016-2021 calls for enabling effective STI service delivery and capacity building of local staff in primary healthcare by implementing training in remote communities on STI treatment and testing.

ASHM is proud to be collaborating with the North Queensland PHN, Cairns Sexual Health, Thursday Island Community Wellness Centre, Bamaga Health Service and NPA Family and Community Services to contribute to the implementation of the Action Plan and improve the management of BBV and STIs in primary care in the region.
