Following the Australian Health Ministers? Conference (22 April 2010), all states and territories along with the Commonwealth have endorsed the five new national strategies for blood-borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). These new strategies will guide policies in relation to prevention, testing, management and treatment of BBVs and STIs for the next three years.
This is an exciting time for the sector and ASHM would like to particularly thank the writers, chairs and members of the EWRG (Expert Writing and Reference Groups) along with the state, territory and Commonwealth officers who took carriage of the documents once they left the drafting team. The participation of and contribution from community, research and professional agencies demonstrates Australia?s commitment and spirit of cooperation in responding to BBVs and STIs. ASHM is very proud to have been part of this process, which heralds an invigorated shared response and sense of responsibility. Now comes the challenge of putting these strategies into practice. ASHM looks forward to working with you to ensure their successful implementation.
The five strategies are:
-
Sixth National HIV Strategy;
-
First National Hepatitis B Strategy;
-
Second National Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategy;
-
Third National Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Strategy; and
-
Third National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategy.
