This update will provide GPs with the knowledge to engage their patients in care, perform investigations and describe referral pathways with the opportunity to learn more about hepatitis B & C prescribing. Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers will be able to identify prevention, risk factors, testing, patient education and management/treatment support.

This update is for GPs, Nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers and other interested primary health care providers from an AMS setting.

Hepatitis B & C is a viral infection that affects the liver. The rate of newly diagnosed hepatitis C infection in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in 2014 was 5 times higher than the non‑Indigenous population. Without appropriate monitoring and treatment, damage to the liver can lead to mild, moderate or serious liver disease and, in some cases, liver cancer and liver failure.
